Description

The exterior of the Hiram House playground is shown. The first settlement house in Cleveland was Hiram House, which was established in 1896. The settlement movement addressed such issues as overcrowding, poverty, corruption, and disease, which were caused by rapid industrialization and urbanization, according to the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History.
