Summary

Description
English: Reconstruction of a burial vault in the Greater Vaults of the Serapeum of Saqqara.

In the middle of the burial chamber lies the sarcophagus, which was lowered into a recess in the floor. Inside, the mummified Apis bull rests on a mummy board to which he is secured. His face was plastered and gilded. The sun disc between his horns symbolizes Harthor. On his back lies Horus as a falcon. The sarcophagus was shrouded with two pieces of cloth.

Various burial items were placed in the chamber, including the canopic jars of the Apis, djed pillars and a multitude of shabtis and other smaller objects.

The vault entrance is located in an underground hallway that connected multiple Apis tombs. After the burial the entrance was closed with masonry. Stelas were put on this closing wall to commemorate the life of the Apis. Additionally, an altar facilitated the bringing of offerings.
