Description
English: A view of the British ship Sylph in action off Santander against a French frigate on the night of 31 July 1801. French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802).

The action between the Sylph and the French frigate, which took place off Cape San Andero (Santander), lasted for over an hour, at the end of which the Sylph, seen here in the foreground, having sustained much damage to her rigging, slipped out of the wind to make repairs. The French frigate then set all sail and escaped.
