Some questions on the SAT and PSAT are free-response, as opposed to multiple-choice, and require a test taker to provide the numerical answer. Possible answers for grid-in questions are never negative and range from 0 to 9999. Fractions and decimals may also be entered using the symbols in the grey background.

For the example shown, the system of equations can be solved to determine that the value of x is 7 and the value of y is 5, making 12 the answer to the question. The answer can also be obtained more directly by subtracting the first equation from the second.

The test-taker writes ("grids-in") the answer on the machine-scanned form shown. Only the bubbles are read by the scanner; the test taker will typically write in the digits above the bubbles as an aid to enter the desired answer.
