Summary

Author
Possibly Marcus Gheeraerts (according to Brissenden)
Description

Queen Elizabeth I Dancing with Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester . Artist unknown possibly Marcus Gheeraerts / French Valois school, c . 1580 . Dancing the la volta. Courtesy of Penshurst Palace, Kent

Formerly thought to be Queen Elizabeth I of England dancing with Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Now the title of the painting, at Penshurst Place in Kent, is thought to be ironic or mocking, as the painting is associated with the French Valois school, c. 1580.
