English: On 23 May 1966, following the death of her father King Korokī five days earlier, Princess Piki was crowned as the first Māori Queen. She assumed her mother’s name, Te Ātairangikaahu.
Te Ātairangikaahu is to date the longest-serving Māori monarch. She died in August 2006, shortly after celebrating her 40th jubilee as Queen.
The photograph above shows Queen Te Ātairangikaahu in New Delhi in 1975. The photograph was transferred to Archives New Zealand by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Head Office.
