Summary

Description
English: Prince Albert Statue - Queen Square The unveiling of the statue of Prince Albert on 30th November 1866 was the first public appearance of Queen Victoria following a long period of mourning after her husband's death in 1861. Albert is seated on his horse Nimrod and is in the uniform of a Field Marshall with Order of the Garter. In honour of the occasion the square was re-named from High Green to Queen Square. Throughout the years the statue has been moved up, down and around the square as roads and traffic have changed, even for a period on top of the gents lavatories. Yet another scheme is underway to refresh the pedestrian area behind the statue.
