Lieutenant-General James Barry, 4th Earl of Barrymore had a distinguished military career gaining the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1688 in the service of the army of William of Orange. He fought at the Battle of Almanza on 25 April 1707, where he was taken prisoner. He gained the rank of Major-General in 1709 acceding to the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1710/11.
