Location: Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Description: 'The Hospital for Sick Children' as it was first known had been established in 1878 through the efforts of Scots-born Mary McConnel.
The young women whom she employed worked long hours and had to cope with such complaints as lead poisoning, typhoid and diphtheria. Probationers had to be at least 19 years of age and were paid around 5 shillings a week. (Description supplied with photograph.)
