Object history From 1815 to at least 1946, Aboriginal people who distinguished themselves in the eyes of the non-Aboriginal population in Australia were honoured with an inscribed metal plaque to hang around the neck. These plaques were known as 'King', 'breast' or 'brass' plates. A limited range of artefacts survive from the colonial period that reflect relations between Aboriginal people and settlers. Despite their often negative connotations, the National Museum of Australia sees breastplates as significant cross-cultural items that can help tell this story. The Billy Hippie breastplate is one of the finest breastplates in the National Museum of Australia collection. Billy’s importance is evident from the 'King of Minnon' inscription relating to his long association with Minnon Station, now known as Cubbie Station, near Angledool, Queensland. The breastplate was a well-crafted and expensive item intended to have considerable impact on Billy and anyone else who saw it.
