Summary

Description The Chilean destroyer Ministro Portales (DD-17) underway in 1978. The ship is camouflaged because of the Argentine "Operación Soberanía" (Operation Sovereignty), a planned invasion of Chile that started on 22 December 1978. The invasion was halted after a few hours and Argentine forces retreated from the conflict zone without a fight. The tensions were caused by the Beagle conflict, a border dispute between Chile and Argentina over the possession of Picton, Lennox and Nueva islands and the scope of the maritime jurisdiction associated with those islands. The islands are strategically located off the south edge of Tierra del Fuego and at the east end of the Beagle Channel.
