Summary

Description

Medallions of Pietro Barbo "The Venetian" (Pope Paul II) (1417-1471, ruled as Pope Paul II from 1464), Palazzo Venezia, 1455 & 1465. He built the surviving Palazzo Venezia (then called Palazzo San Marco) in Rome, firstly in 1455, when Cardinal of the Basilica of Saint Mark, and enlarged in 1465, when Pope Paul II. Inscriptions:

  • PETRUS BARBUS VENETUS CARDINALIS S(ANCTI) MARCI / HAS AEDES CONDIDIT ANNO CHRISTI MCCCCLV ("This house he built in the year of Christ 1455")
  • PAULUS II VENETUS PONT(IFEX) MAX(IMUS) / HAS AEDES CONDIDIT ANNO CHRISTI MCCCCLXV ("This house he built in the year of Christ 1465"). "In one of the two display cabinets (in the Sala del Pappagallo) there is a bronze medallion on display commissioned by Pope Paul II in 1465 to celebrate the beginning of the extension works of the palace: the front of the medallion shows a profile portrait of the pontiff, the back depicts the palace itself, in its late-medieval form. This and other commemorative medals were placed in earthenware money-boxes, which were placed inside the masonry, following a custom that dates back to classical antiquity. The second display case contains some of these money-boxes, which were found during the nineteenth and twentieth century construction works". (vive.cultura.gov.it/en/palazzo-venezia [1])
