"Mounted in the ceiling [of the White House Entrance Hall], Liberty and Union were painted in a modified illusionistic style found especially in Venetian ceiling paintings of the 16th century . . . .

"The personification of Liberty, crowned with golden stars symbolizing the original states, is sturdily poised and dynamically draped as she defends the flag with her body and her weapons. Her attitude and expression are at once vigilant and serene . . . . Her weapons, whose triangular placement stabilizes the composition, are held in abeyance, the sword's point behind her shoulder and the spear entwined with red ribbon and the laurel wreath of victory."
