Summary

Description
English: LIBERTY MOTOR OIL CAN, 4 gallon (20 litre), vintage circa 1931, which contained ‘Motor Oil AE40. Liberty guaranteed first grade lubricant’.

The proprietor of Liberty Oils was McGLEW & CO. LIMITED, 15 Waymouth Street, Adelaide, South Australia. The can manufacturer (stamped on base) was ‘SIMPSON ADELAIDE’.

This VARY RARE can advertises “Liberty oils for every use: Liberty Motor Oils, Liberty Agricultural Oils, Liberty Tractor Oils, Liberty Industrial Oils, Liberty Deisel Oils. Liberty Greases for every purpose.”

McGlew & Co. Limited was incorporated at Adelaide, on 16 February 1924, the chairman being Charles Thomas McGlew (1870-1931), merchant and importer, and an A.I.F. veteran of WWI (27th Battn).

In the late 1920’s the company were Australian agents for the Atlantic Union Oil Company, leading to this can being produced c.1931, but because of McGlew’s death that year (from effects of gassing in the war) the company collapsed. The only advertising in Australia for Liberty Oil was for ‘Liberty Oil First Grade A’, during 1931-34, by Riedel Bros’ Motors, Renmark Avenue, Renmark, who were obviously selling remaindered stock, and sold out by 1934.
