Summary

Description

1977 Hesketh 308E, driven by Graham Williams in the Formula 1 show class of the 2014 CRAA classic race in Aarhus.

The Hesketh formula one team is without a doubt best known for being the team of James Hunt in 1973-75 (racing in Heskeths 308, 308B and 308C), but after Hunt's departure, things went rapidly downhill.

By 1976 the model name had reached 308D and no less than 4 different drivers took turns trying to get the car to perform - the typical results would be DNQs and DNFs, with a 7th place for Harald Ertl being the best result of the season.

The 1977 car was named 308E (this one) and the best result would once again be a 7th place, this time by Rupert Keegan in the 24 car (this one) at the Austrian grand prix.

For 1978 Hesketh was down to a single car (308E), barely evolved from the model of the previous year. After 3 different drivers had failed for the first 6 races of the season (3 DNQ, 3 DNPQ and 1 retirement) the team finally folded.

This car is almost as politically incorrect as it gets: sponsored by Penthouse (with models on the front and sides) and Rizla, the cigarette paper brand. Yes, the times have certainly changed since 1977. These two sponsorships are of course no coincidence, as the Hesketh team had an image strongly associated with a lifestyle full of champagne, luxury hotels and "beautiful women"
