Quercus durata—leather oak. The shrubby leather oak grows in the coast ranges from Trinity County in the north to Santa Barbara County in the South with outliers in the Sierra foothills. A rare variety, Q. durata var. gabrielensis is found in the Transverse ranges. Often called a strict serpentine endemic, it is found at times on other substrates, It adapts well to gardens, where it can be shaped in to a hedge. It is often touted as the perfect oak for small lots.
