Summary
| Description |
English: Behind the hedge - running parallel with the hedge and on land which was once in the grounds of Mayfair Court, Clifftown Gardens - an air raid shelter was built in 1939. It was in the form of a concrete tube buried underground, with entrances at both ends. On completion, the ground was slightly raised over the roof of the shelter, and grassed over. Mayfair Court was owned by Lydia Cecilia Hill. She was a favourite of Ibrahim, Sultan of Johore. The blue and white Art Deco building of Mayfair Court can be seen in the background to the right, and the associated yellow and white Art Deco building, 139 Grand Drive, can be seen in the centre background. |
