Summary

Description
English: The Hershey-Measer House, 5792 Main Street, Williamsville, New York, August 2020. One of several former residences on Main Street to be converted in the 20th century for commercial or office use, the Hershey-Measer House stands out for the unusually intact state of its original design, much more so than any other such repurposed building in the village. The Greek Revival style which was popular at the time of its construction (c. 1840) is exemplified by the cornice returns on the side gables and, even more so, by the rectangular stone lintels crowning the six-over-six sash windows. The house's first owner was Christian Hershey (1773-1848), a Lancaster, Pennsylvania-born farmer who came to Williamsville just after the conclusion of the War of 1812 and found there a fledgling community of his fellow Mennonites; as time went on, the family of which he was patriarch became one of the most prominent in the early history of the village. Some time after the death of his daughter Mary in 1884, the house passed into the hands of John Measer (1854-1890), whose widow Mary (1858-1939) continued living there until her death. "Grandma" Measer's four sons themselves went on to prominence among the village's business community and as longtime owners of the Amherst Bee, which continues to be published by descendants of the family. It was during the Measer era when the wood-frame addition to the west side of the building (originally a "summer kitchen", intended to avoid the house overheating when cooking on warm days) and the carriage house in back were built. The house was converted to offices in 1970 and became a village-designated historic landmark in 2014.
