Summary

Description
English: Ceiling of the Grand Temple, Freemasons' Hall.

In the centre is the celestial sky. The border has the arms of the United Grand Lodge of England at each corner. Surrounding this is a 4.5m deep mosaic cornice that took nearly two years to make.

  • At the top (east) is the Ark of the Covenant and Jacob's ladder with King Solomon and King Hiram, who built the first temple at Jerusalem.
  • At the right (north) are St George and the Dragon, and the arms of the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (who was Grand Master when the hall was built).
  • At the bottom (west) are Euclid and Pythagoras, whose 47th Problem is represented by three squares.
  • At the left (south) is Helios the sun god on his chariot, the All-Seeing Eye and a five pointed star.
  • The corner angels represent the four cardinal virtues: Prudence, Temperance, Fortitude and Justice.
  • The Biblical text is from Chronicles I 17:12-14.
