Notes

George Washington sat for this portrait while he was staying at Rockingham (house), near Rocky Hill in Franklin Township, Somerset County, New Jersey in 1783. The portrait is a pastel on paper (25.5 x 19.5), unsigned by William Dunlap (1766-1839); Dunlap was only 17 years old when he painted it. It now hangs in the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. It depicts Washingtons formal uniform while he stayed in Franklin Township.
