DescriptionFormer St. Matthew RC Church, Buffalo, New York - 20200225.jpg
English: The former St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, 1066 East Ferry Street at Wyoming Avenue, Buffalo, New York, February 2020. Though the stone Baroque-style church seen here, with its design based on the Cathedral of Aachen in Germany, dates to 1927, the congregation was founded in 1908 to serve the growing German Catholic community in the neighborhood popularly known as the Jammerthal and was headed up for many years by the Rev. George Sellinger. After their original building was destoryed by a tornado in 1910, they worshiped in what's now the basement of the building seen here while slowly accruing the funds to build the church on top. The church closed in 1993 as a victim of changing demographics, with the congregation folded into that of St. Martin de Porres on Northampton Street; the building is now vacant and decaying.
