Description

Tinted, embossed and framed postcard of Eddington, Herne Bay, Kent, England. Unused and un-postmarked. The picture shows the original village or hamlet long before the area became a suburb of Herne Bay. The credit on the back says: "The Milton Elite-Gazette series no.10, published by Woolstone Bros, London EC. Printed at our works in Germany." This would date it from 1900 to early 1914. Most of the buildings in the photo still exist. The site is on the east side of the Canterbury Road (A299), just north of Priory House at the southern end of Eddington.

Points of interest
  • The house in the foreground is in the Kentish vernacular style with limewashed weatherboarding, but the taller houses are late Victorian.
  • There is no footpath.
  • There is the blacksmith or a working woman in white apron in the forge doorway, a woman standing in the street, and a person in the garden behind the white picket gate (obscured in this image).
  • Further along the street is a cart.
  • Note the striped, yellow window blinds on the Victorian house.
  • The orange-red roof of the forge in the foreground is pan-tiled.
  • The site is the Canterbury Road, looking north.
Date 1900-1914 (probably before 1907)
