Description

Postcard of Eddington, Herne Bay, Kent, England. Postmarked "Herne Bay, Au 22, 08". The picture shows the original village or hamlet long before the area became a suburb of Herne Bay. Most of the buildings in the photo still exist. The site is on the east side of the Canterbury Road (A299), just north of Priory House at the southern end of Eddington. The camera is looking north.

Points of interest: The old post office in the foreground is in the Kentish vernacular style with limewashed weatherboarding, but the taller houses are late Victorian. The small building next to the post office is the smithy. There is no footpath. Note the window blinds on the Victorian house. The four-wheeled chaise has the lady in the driving seat and the uniformed driver is the passenger. However this may be posed as the vehicle has apparently stopped.
