Description
English: The painting was previously identified with Caterina Farnese (1637-1684), daughter of Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma, and Margherita de' Medici. She became nun in 1662 as Teresa Margherita dell’Incarnazione. It's now recognised in agreement as a portrait of her sister Maria Maddalena (1638-1693): the face is very similar to a portrait of the princess engraved by Vort, and it has been observed the popularity of the portrait in guise of the eponymous saint of the sitter in that period.
