Object history
Deutsch: Die Herkunft des schon seit 1890 geführten und erst am 16. März 1910 durch König Wilhelm II. von Preußen verliehenen Wappen ist unklar. Oelde war seit dem 16. Jahrhundert Wigbold; das älteste Siegel ist seit 1754 nachweisbar und zeigt den Kirchenpatron Johannes der Täufer mit dem Gotteslamm unter einem Schild mit den verschlungenen Großbuchstaben "V" und "L". In einem Siegel von 1814 wurden die Buchstaben durch eine Sonne ersetzt, von der sich möglicherweise Mond und Stern herleiten, zumal der Mond auch als Attribut des hl. Johannes gilt.
English: The arms were granted on March 16, 1910, but the exact origins are not known. The oldest seal of the town dates from the early 18th century and shows St. John Baptist, the patron saint of the town as well as a small shield with the letters V and L. The meaning of the letters is unknown. In a later seal from the 19th century the letters were replaced by a sun. There are no old seals with the present arms or the symbols.
