English: Ctenacanthus formosus Newberry, 1873 - fossil shark spine from the Pennsylvanian of Kansas or Nebraska, USA. (public display, Nebraska State Museum of Natural History, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA)

The Pennsylvanian-aged shark spine shown above has been identified as Ctenacanthus formosus. However, the species was originally described from Mississippian rocks.

The spine was originally located along the anterior margin of the shark's dorsal fin.

Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Chondrichthyes, Elasmobranchii, Ctenacanthiformes, Ctenacanthidae

Stratigraphy: possibly the Bonner Springs Formation (Bonner Springs Shale), Upper Pennsylvanian

Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site in Nebraska or Kansas, USA
