Description
English: Corporal Thomas James Wright (1882-1916), was born on 23 August 1882 at 89 Islington Street, Collingwood. A slater and tiler by trade, he also played senior Australian rules football for the Collingwood Football Club in the VFL competition (4 games in 1906, and 8 games in 1907). In 1908, he was working in New Zealand, and was appointed captain of the New Zealand Australian Rules football team that played in the 1908 Jubilee Australasian Football Carnival in Melbourne (he was one of New Zealand’s best players in that competition). In 1909, he returned to Melbourne, and was granted a permit to play with Prahran in the VFA Australian Rules competition. A corporal (he had been promoted to corporal on the field on 16 October 1916) in the 59th Battalion AIF (he had enlisted on 3 February 1915, and transferred from the 7th to the 59th Battalion on 4 August 1916), he was killed in action in the field on 12 December 1916 in France, and was buried at Delville Wood Cemetery.
