Das Wappen von Bischof Dr. Stephan Ackermann enthält zwei auf seine Person bezogene, aus dem Weihbischofswappen übernommene Symbole, nämlich Palmzweig und Pflug; es ist aber über das bisherige Wappen hinaus das Wappen eines regierenden Trierer Diözesanbischofs. Kontinuität und Neubeginn werden also in ihm sichtbar.

Der Wappen-Schild ist auf ein bischöfliches Vortragekreuz aufgelegt und umgeben von einem grünen Hut mit auf jeder Seite zehn herabhängenden Quasten, in vier Reihen angeordnet. Das Wappen ist viergeteilt und zeigt (vom Wappenträger her gesehen) im rechten oberen Feld das (rote) Trierer Kreuz auf silbernem (weißem) Grund, das sich im unteren linken Feld wiederholt. Im linken oberen Feld zeigt es einen goldenen Palmzweig auf rotem, im rechten unteren Feld einen schwarzen Pflug auf goldenem Grund. Das Wappen wird unten beschlossen durch ein Spruchband mit Motto.

In Psalm 36,10 heißt es: „Denn bei dir ist die Quelle des Lebens, in deinem Licht schauen wir das Licht.“ Daraus ist der Wahlspruch des Bischofs „In lumine tuo Domine“ – „In deinem Licht, o Herr“ entnommen.
