Description
English: Coat of arms of John Still (c. 1543 – 26 February 1607/8), Bishop of Bath and Wells, from his monument in Wells Cathedral, Somerset, England, on the the east wall of the north transept leading into the Chapter House. The blazon of the arms is as follows: Sable gouttée d'eau argent, three roses of the last seeded or barbed vert. These arms were granted by Sir William Dethick, Garter Principal King of Arms, on 10 April 1593 on Still's elevation to the bishopric: Arthur J[ohn] Jewers (1892) Wells Cathedral: Its Monumental Inscriptions and Heraldry: Together with the Heraldry of the Palace, Deanery, and Vicar's Close: With Annotations from Wills, Registers, etc., and Illustrations of Arms, London: Mitchell and Hughes, p. 147 OCLC: 6160641. The roses in the arms have not been painted vert (green) but Or (gold). At the time when Jewers wrote his book, he noted that the monument had been newly painted: see p. 146.
