Summary

Description

Chasmoptera hutti has a common name of Spoon-winged lacewing.

~70mm long from tip of head to tail of wings.

This awesome insect fluttered and landed in front of me as we were walking through some low shrubs. The yellow alerted me to it being something that needed investigating.

This insect is a Lacewing belonging to the Neuroptera family.

"Chasmoptera, with seven three species (See Biramus comment below), is confined to south-western Australia. Other genera of spoon-winged lacewings occur in Africa, southern Europe and South America. The common name (spoon-wings) alludes to the stalked hindwings with subapical expansions.

One species is still found in bushlands around Perth during November and December. Little is known about the behaviour and life-history of these odd insects" www.museum.wa.gov.au/waiss/pages/image.htm
