| Description |
English: Cawley War Memorial in Eye Church This war memorial to the three sons of Lord and Lady Cawley of nearby Berrington Hall reminds us of the high price some families paid during the First World War. The three sons were: Major John Stephen Cawley, killed 1st Sept. 1914 at Nery,- aged 34; Captain Harold Thomas Cawley, killed 24 Sept 1915, at Gallipoli - aged 37; and Captain Oswald Cawley, killed 22 Aug. 1918, near Merville - aged 35.
Their deaths span the war with the first being killed within a month of the outbreak, and the last death within three months of the armistice in 1918. |
