Bellingham City Hall these days. Surrounded by a camp for the homeless. Homelessness has become a major national problem. Not just a Bellingham situation. Bellingham has become a popular place to live so quite a few people do try and come here from other parts of the country that may not be as livable in some ways. Some parts of the country are not welcoming for LGBTQ folks, for instance. We have a somewhat milder climate, more welcoming physical climate though it's often rainy and grey. It doesn't let up for days on end. Not so pleasant in a tent. Homelessness is a nationwide problem caused by many factors, including rising cost of housing seemingly in the parts of USA where most people live; metropolitan areas. Maybe there's still some affordable housing in some small town in Wyoming. Due to the need for social distancing, shelters for the homeless; even the expanded ones, are too crowded so I hear that camping is now somewhat tolerated, as long as people aren't causing problems or mess. Maybe still not recommended, but what do you do? I'm hoping the incoming administration can make affordable housing a high priority. This is really a national problem. |
