Summary

Description
English: The Williamsville Branch of Bank of America, 5529 Main Street at South Cayuga Road, Williamsville, New York, August 2020. With front and side elevations utterly dominated by enormous, round-arched, floor-to-ceiling windows framed by decorative voussoirs and stylized stone pilaster strips, the building's design - the work of Buffalo-based architect Louis Greenstein - looks both backwards in history (to the Renaissance Revival, a style that was popular around the turn of the century but passé by 1935, when it was constructed) and forward (to the Modernist aesthetic that would come to the fore within a decade or two; witness the flat roof and simplified geometric forms). The building was home to Williamsville's post office until 1948, then served as a branch location for a series of banks: first Liberty Bank, then to its successor companies Norstar, Fleet, and now Bank of America. The building was designated a landmark by Williamsville's Historic Preservation Commission in 2014.
