Summary

Description
English: The former Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 146 Edward Street at South Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, April 2020. Founded in 1849 on land domated to the diocese by Louis Le Couteulx de Caumont and with an Irish-American ethnic majority among its parishioners at the outset, the current church building is an odd Frankenstein's Monster: the transept and choir, seen here in the foreground facing Edward Street, were built in 1900 to a Gothic Revival design in brick by Max Beierl, previously of the firm of Lansing & Beierl, while the sandstone nave and narthex in the background increased the seating capacity to 900 people upon their completion in 1925. The parish dissolved in 2005 due to a dwindling population of practicing Catholics in the neighborhood, and the building was later purchased by Dennis Maher, a local artist and professor of architecture at the University at Buffalo who is buily converting it to a "design and building studio that will help foster a new crop of buildings in the city" (in the words of the Buffalo News).
