Description

Wall painting by Arturo Herrera, Band (enamel on wall, 9 x 15,54 m, 2011, NSU Art Museum, Fort Lauderdale, FL). The image illustrates a key body of work from in Arturo Herrera's career: his site-specific wall paintings, which extended his collage-based approach to new, often more abstract and minimal work in new mediums. His wall paintings were seamless, hard-edge, colorful works of rhythmic plays of both abstract forms and vernacular, though usually barely legible, figurative imagery. They consisted of both indoor and (as in this work at the NSU Art Museum, Fort Lauderdale) outdoor public artworks. This work was publicly exhibited in prominent exhibitions, discussed in major art journals and daily press publications and commissioned by major institutions.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key body of work from throughout Arturo Herrera's career that began in the mid-1990s when he extended his collage-based approach to new, often more abstract and minimal, bodies of work including site-specific wall paintings. His wall paintings were seamless, hard-edged works combining appealing colors, rhythmic plays of repetitive abstract forms and vernacular imagery vaguely suggesting fantasy or narrative; they ranged from explicitly figurative and overtly sexual to the largely abstract, and many were outdoor public artworks. Because the article is about an artist and his work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to understand this fundamental body of work in his overall art, which brought Herrera early and ongoing recognition through exhibitions, coverage by major critics and publications and institutional commissions. Herrera's work of this type and this series is discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Arturo Herrera, and the work no longer is viewable, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.
