English: 1897 illustration of Archibald Hamilton Rowand, Jr., Pennsylvania native and recipient of the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 1st West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry during the American Civil War. Assigned to scout and spy duties in March 1865, he was one of two men to make it through enemy lines to carry information between Major-General Philip H. Sheridan and Ulysses S. Grant, Commanding General of the U.S. Army, which led to the Union's victory over Confederate forces during Sheridan's Raid from Winchester (public domain source: J.W.
