English: Saint Peter and Saint Paul’s Church, Honing, Norfolk, England. Mural monument to Rev. Randall Burroughes (1829-1872) of w:Hoveton Hall, Norfolk (owned by his elder brother Lt. Henry Negus Burroughes II (1821-1872), RN, of Burlingham Hall, Norfolk). Rev. Randall Burroughes was a younger son of Sir Henry Negus Burroughes I (b.1791), High Sheriff of Norfolk and MP, of Burlingham Hall, Burlingham St Peter, Norfolk (an estate of 7,879 acres), by his first wife Jane Sarah Hoste (1792-1851), sister of Capt. w:Sir William Hoste, 1st Baronet (1780–1828), R.N. (Source: A Naval Biographical Dictionary by William Richard O'Byrne "Burroughes, Henry Negus" [1]). The parents of Sir Henry Negus Burroughes I were James Burkin Burroughes I (1760-1803) of Burlingham Hall and Christabel Negus (1764-1843), daughter and heiress of Henry Negus (1734-1807) of Hoveton Hall (re-built 1809-12 by Christabel in her widowhood). James Burkin Burroughes I (1760-1803) was the eldest son and heir of Jeremiah Burroughes (1728-1767), JP,DL (whose monument survives in Wymondham Abbey, Norfolk[3]), by his wife Diana Burkin, a daughter and co-heiress of James Burkin of Burlingham Hall. The younger son of Jeremiah Burroughes was Randall Burroughes (d.1818, will National Archives) of Burfield Hall, Wymondham. In 1852 Rev. Randall Burroughes married Emily Harbord, the daughter of Edward Harbord, 3rd Baron Suffield. The couple lived at Hoveton Hall until Randall's death in 1872. Rev. Randall Burroughes (1829-1872) was probably the father of Christabel Mary Burroughes (1859-1942) who married Edward George Cubitt II (1860-1933) of Honing Hall, Norfolk. Three of her sons were killed in action in WW I, two at Gallipoli on the same day of 15 August 1915, namely Edward Randall Cubitt (1884-1915) and Victor Murray Cubitt (1886-1915), aged 31 and 28 respectively. Two years later in 1917 a third son, Eustace Henry Cubitt (1889-1917) was killed in action in Gaza, aged 28, as is recorded on a mural monument in Honing Church. In 1919 Burlingham Hall was sold by the Burroughes family, with 3,500 acres, to Norfolk County Council as part of its farming estate. |
